The Brass Spoon

A short drive onto the moor's edge in Tavistock for proudly, defiantly British comfort food, cooked with the kind of care most people save for showing off.

Bubble and squeak elevated to something close to art. Honestly.

The Brass Spoon makes the food your nan threatened to make and then never quite did this well. The bubble and squeak is crisp-edged, soft-centred and topped with a yolk that floods the plate on cue.

Save room, because the apple and blackberry crumble is a serious piece of work, all tart fruit and rubbly, buttery topping, and the frangipane tart that follows is almost showing off.

It is warm, generous and unpretentious, which in 2026 feels close to radical. Worth the run out of the city on a Sunday.
